Mental ray is a commerial rendering software. It is currently included in several of Autodesks (and others) modelling softwares. The main feature is the physically correct light simulation, which can render production quality images. Mental ray uses the photon mapping to simulate all possible light paths. It is fully programmable using a custom shading language (MetaSL) or C/C++. Mental images was bought 2007 by Nvidia.
